The Walshaw Care Service User's Charter

  1. To be encouraged to and assisted in maintaining a high quality of life, with respect to the resident's individuality.
  2. To be encouraged to maintain independence, choosing wherever possible their own level of freedom, habits and lifestyle.
  3. To have their affairs dealt with confidentially, and to have their privacy respected.
  4. To be treated with courtesy at all times and to have their dignity respected.
  5. To be encouraged to fulfil their human, emotional and social needs.
  6. To be encouraged to fulfil their spiritual needs and to follow the religion of their choice.
  7. To be addressed as they wish.
  8. To be safeguarded from discrimination on any grounds, whether it be age, disability, sex, race, language or religion.
  9. To be given the choice to handle their own medicines where it is appropriate to do so.
  10. To be able to retain the doctor of their choice wherever possible.
  11. To receive medical and nursing care in private.
  12. To bath, wash and use toilet facilities in private or with assistance if the resident chooses.
  13. To be encouraged to use the facilities available to other people living in the community and to be assisted to make this possible.
  14. To have their care evaluated and discussed at regular intervals with the management of the Home and to be given genuine and informed choices of the options available for the future.
  15. To be freely given information about themselves, their condition and prospects and to be informed of the person ultimately responsible for their care.
  16. To be cared for by appropriately qualified and trained staff.
  17. To be able to receive visitors at any reasonable time.
  18. To have the right to privately consult a solicitor, advisor or advocate and to have the right to be represented when this is necessary, to put forward their point of view.
  19. To be provided with homely, safe and clean accommodation of a high standard and to be encouraged to bring personal items into the Home.
  20. To have access to a telephone which is placed in a position of privacy.
  21. To be provided with a choice of high quality, appetising and nourishing food appropriate to the individual's dietary needs and personal wishes.
  22. To be encouraged to participate in recreational activities if the individual so desires, and to be given the opportunity to develop new hobbies and pastimes.
  23. To be encouraged to continue to form friendships.
  24. To be able to comment freely on or complain about any aspect of the service provided by the Home through informal or formal channels.
  25. To have a contract of residence, a brochure and statement of Terms and Conditions of Residency prior to admission.
  26. To be given a quality service of a consistent standard that is appropriate and responsive to the individual's needs.
